Gary Robert Keehn had bail revoked, accused of threatening girlfriend with broken ice pipe

A BWS worker will stay in custody over allegations he terrorised his girlfriend, which included holding a broken ice pipe to her throat, a court has heard.
Gary Robert Keehn, 41, had his bail bid abandoned in the Supreme Court on Wednesday, after a justice decided it was “inappropriate” for him to have been bailed so close to his alleged victim.
Jarrad Sim, for Mr Keehn, said they would be withdrawing the bail application, as they didn’t have another address to provide.
Mr Keehn was originally granted bail by Magistrate Koula Kossiavelos last month but prosecution applied for the decision to be reviewed by the Supreme Court.
Justice Sandi McDonald said it was “inappropriate” for Mr Keehn to have been granted bail less than 2km from his alleged victim.
The court heard Mr Keehn and the alleged victim had been in relationship for one month.
They got into an argument on July 23, after the alleged victim confronted Mr Keehn about his drug use.
“It is alleged … the respondent approached (the woman) and held her down by the throat,” Justice McDonald said.
The woman’s mother intervened and told Mr Keehn to get out of the house.
However, the woman ended up going with Mr Keehn back to his house.
“She said that she received a text message from another male, which caused the respondent to become jealous and angry,” Justice Sandi McDonald said.
The court heard Mr Keehn then grabbed her phone, sending a text to the man saying “hey c***, you’re dead c***”.
The court heard Mr Keehn forced the woman to send a text to the other man telling him to stop contacting her, before climbing on top of her and pinning her down with his legs.
“He then … struck her with some considerable force,” Justice McDonald said.
“At one point the respondent broke an ice pipe and used that to threaten her by holding it up against her throat.”
The court heard the woman’s thumb was cut with the ice pipe.
The Naracoorte man is charged with two counts of aggravated assault and one count of threaten to kill or endanger life.
The court heard the woman told police “I’m too scared to go home, I don’t even want to leave the police station”.
“I feel like Gary is going to kill me, or get someone else to do it for him,” she said.
Justice McDonald said similar allegations made by Keehn’s former partners were “troubling”.
“They (the former partners) each described the respondent as becoming abusive while intoxicated with a rage that appears to have been fuelled by jealousy,” she said.
The court heard Mr Sim said there were inconsistencies in the woman’s account, including her decision to return to Mr Keehn’s home.
The court heard Mr Keehn, who worked at BWS, admitted to taking methamphetamine on the day of the alleged assault.
Due to another address not being available, Justice McDonald revoked Mr Keehn’s bail.
