What is Gaslighting?

An alleged domestic abuser with a history of drug abuse who allegedly threatened to bash his partner’s “head in” with a dumbbell has been granted bail, a court has heard.

The Mount Gambier Magistrates Court heard Ethan Alan Glass, 23, intends to plead guilty to the shocking domestic violence allegations.

Mr Glass is yet to enter a formal plea, with his defence lawyer Kate Annells seeking to have her client referred to the Abuse Prevention Program.

Ms Annells said Mr Glass had a “history of drug use” and was “on marijuana at the time of this offending”, the court heard.

In January, prosecutors elected not to pursue targeted domestic violence laws against Mr Glass.

In 2019 the state government made the act of strangulation or choking a specific offence, which can attract a maximum seven-year jail term, while a charge of threatening to kill or endanger life can attract a maximum jail term of 10 years.

A police prosecutor previously told the court Mr Glass will instead face one count of aggravated assault and two counts of aggravated assault with a weapon.

During the alleged violent outburst, police say Mr Glass strangled his partner and threatened to “smash her head in” while holding a dumbbell above his head.

Police also allege he used a pair of scissors and threatened to kill her.

Prosecutors did not oppose Mr Glass’ bail application “given the defendant will be closely monitored and will be participating in programs that will also be of benefit”.

Magistrate Koula Kossiavelos warned Mr Glass to “be on his best behaviour”.

The Mount Gambier man will next front court in March.
