A new and unique play space is coming to Mount Gambier's railway precinct following endorsement at this month's local council meeting.

A 'Learn to Ride' space designed to boost the cycling safety and confidence of children of all ages, will be constructed upon the western platform at the Mount Gambier Railway Lands in the first quarter of the 2024/2025 financial year.

The learn to ride space is one of three play spaces planned to be added to the Mount Gambier Railway Lands, with draft concept designs for a youth space and nature play space developed for community consultation in July.

The Learn to Ride Space will feature replicas of real-life road and traffic settings including a roundabout, median strip, speed bump, railway crossing, zebra crossing and various parking scenarios to assist children in learning important traffic rules.

External funding is being sought for the nature play and youth spaces, the documents said.

In 2019, the council accepted an offer from the Mount Gambier Out of School Hours Care of approximately $150,000 to fund the construction of a play structure at the Railway Lands site.

Community consultation was undertake to determine the community’s aspirations for this play space and the results led to the conceptualisation of the youth space, nature play element and the learn-to-ride facility.
