A 10-year-old boy is recovering after being rushed to hospital in a serious condition following an incident at a public swimming pool in Mount Gambier on Wednesday.
Emergency services crews were called to the Wulanda Recreation and Convention Centre in Mount Gambier around 2:20pm to assist the boy, who was rescued by lifeguards.
He was then taken to the Mount Gambier Hospital, before being flown out to the Women’s and Children's Hospital in Adelaide.
A social media post from Wulanda Recreation and Convention Centre said the facility was closed following the incident.
“We are currently closed following an incident at the venue earlier today (Wednesday). We will reopen at 4pm and thank you for your patience,” the post said.
“Our thoughts are with the person who is recovering in hospital, as well as the lifeguards, first responders and those present at the time.”
A spokesperson for Belgravia Leisure, who co-manage the centre alongside the City of Mount Gambier council, said the boy was “currently recovering” in hospital as of Thursday morning.
“The boy’s wellbeing is our number one priority and our thoughts are with the family at this difficult time,” the spokesperson said.
“We will reach out to the relatives and offer any support that we can.
“We are proud of the work undertaken by the capable team on site who worked together with the help of patrons to rescue the boy.
“We will also be offering support to these team members as well as any others who were impacted by this incident.”
The centre has since reopened following the incident.
