Anthony Cooper has bail revoked after allegedly breaking into another community group

A man on bail for allegedly breaking into churches and sporting facilities was arrested after police say his fingerprints were found at yet another crime scene.

What happens when you are charged with a crime?

Fingerprints at a crime scene have led to the arrest of a man on bail for multiple South East break-ins.

Anthony Cooper was already charged with allegedly breaking into Bordertown Catholic Parish, Bordertown Lions Club, St Mary’s Catholic Church, Trinity Lutheran Church, Bordertown Swimming Pool, Bordertown Golf Club, a bakery and a private premise when he was arrested for breaking into the Kingston SE Golf Club and stealing $260 in cash overnight between May 1 and 2.

Cooper appeared at the Mount Gambier Magistrate Court via video link from police custody on Friday where duty solicitor Kate Annels made an application for bail.

As the accused was a prescribed applicant, Magistrate Maria Panagiotidis told Ms Annels she would “struggle to make out special circumstances”.

The police prosecutor opposed the application outlining a history of breaching bail, trespassing and theft and asked Magistrate Panagiotidis to revoke Cooper’s bail for similar offending.

“Police were called to the scene, fingerprints were taken, two sets were located which belonged to the defendant near the point of entry,” he said.

“There’s a pattern of behaviour with respect to the break-ins.

“He is not a suitable candidate for bail.”

The court also heard Cooper had not been staying at his bail address and after breaking up with girlfriend was instead living with his brother.

Magistrate Panagiotidis said Cooper was already facing 11 counts of serious criminal trespass.

“I am familiar with his file, the defendant and the co-defendant, a man by the name of Mr Melino have appeared before me a few times on those matters,” Magistrate Panagiotidis said.

“I am refusing you bail, you’ve not established special circumstances but even if you did I’m of the view that you are likely to continue to offend.”

Cooper’s bail was revoked and he will reappear on all charges in June.
