Smokers continue to have less and less places to light up, with Port Adelaide Enfield Council voting to ban smoking outside council buildings such as libraries and community centres.
Council made the decision at its monthly meeting on Tuesday night.
The move follows last week’s news that community corporations could have power to ban outdoor smoking by residents in apartment buildings.
Councillor David Wilkins moved the proposal, after receiving a complaint from a local constituent.
Mr Wilkins said the Largs Bay resident was upset after walking through second-hand smoke on their way into the Semaphore library.
“Having to walk through that airspace, they were incredibly distressed,” he said.
“We know community spaces, such as libraries, need to be welcoming for everyone.”
Mr Wilkins said the change would ensure people were not subjected to second hand smoke when entering or exiting a council building.
To mark out the areas where smoking is prohibited council will install painted blue lines with the words “no smoking beyond blue line” outside council buildings.
The cost for this line marking including labour, paint and equipment is estimated to be $8650.
Currently ashtray bins are located within close proximity to council buildings entrances, which will also be relocated to outside the prohibited area.
The ban follows a decision by council in March 2020 to stamp out smoking in playgrounds.
This decision was made after 10 year old Hillcrest resident Amber Trappel wrote to council, asking for smoking to be stopped in play areas.
