South Australia’s oldest pizza makers and owners of La Trattoria restaurant have been crowned the best pizza in Adelaide’s CBD.
74-year-old Andrea (Andy) Parisi and his 76-year-old brother Natale (Chris) don’t let their ages slow them down, still working 16 hours a day to bring their customers a little piece of Italy.
The King William Street shop received more than 16 per cent of reader votes in our latest Delicious Local poll.
The brothers learnt to make pizza from their father, Antonino Parisi, who operated Marcellinas.
With the growing success of their father’s restaurant, La Trattoria was established by the brothers in 1975.
“All my life has been making pizza,” Andrea said.
“People love us and we love the people and that’s why we’ve been so long in this business.”
Andrea has not only made his mark in Australia but has had international success after he was crowned the world’s best pizza maker in New York in 2004 and 2005.
“When I went to Los Angeles, they asked me for fingerpints … but then they tried and said ‘you’ve got no fingerprints’,” Andrea chuckled.
“I said all my life I’ve been holding hot plates with my hands, so they had to scan my eyes instead.”
The success of the brother’s business has expanded and they have since opened two Parisi’s restaurants, where their children work.
“In 45 years you achieve a lot, you achieve consistent customers because they’re happy,” Andrea said.
Andrea said using high quality and traditional ingredients is the secret to their delicious pizzas.
“When my marinara comes in under your nose, the smell is sensational,” he said.
“Everything does give it a beautiful taste.”
