A heartbroken mother has channelled her grief into baking and advocacy after her teen son took his own life during South Australia’s first Covid-19 lockdown.

On May 11, 2020, the day after Mother’s Day, Megan White’s eldest son Logan took his life, aged only 14 years old.

The Hallett Cove mum and entrepreneur now uses her Megs Makes baking business to spread awareness through the RU OK? suicide prevention charity.

Mrs White began her home business just under three years ago as a side hustle to pay off credit card debt.

“I was making the odd birthday cake here and there for colleagues in my office but at the time I was drowning in credit card debt,” she explained.

“I couldn’t afford to do anything but the minimum, so I thought if I started a Facebook page and begin getting a few cakes every week and start to pay them off.”

Fast forward to today, Mrs White’s Megs Makes is a well established business recognised across the state.

However, there is still one thing missing in Mrs White’s life: her son Logan.

She describes his passing as a “life altering loss” and not something any other parent to experience.

“In a cruel twist of fate, we lost my husband’s mother the day after Father’s Day,” Mrs White said.

“My job at the time was very high pressure, which only hyper extended the grief with my own mental health issues.

“I went back to work for around a month before I broke down and said ‘I can’t do this anymore’.”

Despite still dealing with the raw loss of her young son while trying to support her other young son through the tragedy, Mrs White decided honour the memory of Logan, raising over $2,285 awareness for suicide prevention for RU OK? Day.

A year on, she’s back to beat her record with a target of $3000, designing a macaron in honour of Logan, RU OK? branded sugar cookies in orange – Logan’s favourite colour.
