Fun of winter at the Bay leads to extension of new Glenelg event

It’s helped to draw people out in the cold winter weather, so this new festival, chock full of street food, a bar and ice-skating has been extended by another week.

Widespread overseas travel unlikely for Australians in 2021

A new winter festival has proven so popular in its first year that it will be extended by another week, after already drawing 50,000 visitors down to the Bay.

Alpine Winter Festival will now be lighting up Glenelg Foreshore until Sunday July 25.

The festival has been lighting up Glenelg’s foreshore for the past 18 days.

Event organiser and Momentarily creative director Stuart Duckworth said despite the challenges of Covid-19 restrictions, the event had experienced strong attendances.

“We have been overwhelmed by the positive response to Alpine’s vision to activate South Australia during the cooler months,” he said.

The festival‘s program includes ice skating, Alpine Winter Markets and a light and soundscape activation, STORM, providing a visual spectacle as the iconic Glenelg Jetty is transformed each night.

Two special performances from iconic performer Peter Combe are on this weekend.

City of Holdfast Bay Mayor Amanda Wilson said the extension the festival is a fantastic opportunity to continue to showcase Glenelg and attract new visitors to the precinct.

“Glenelg has been buzzing over the last few weeks with activities for young and old, and the STORM light show has lit up our Jetty like never before,” she said.

“The community has really embraced the Alpine Winter Festival and we’re very happy to support this extra week of wintry fun”.

Campbelltown mum Apple Chou was enjoying the school holidays on the ice with her son Oscar, 5, on Tuesday.

“It was the first time I visited. I liked having an activity I can participate in with my son, and it made him happy,” she said.
