ATTEMPTING to break a world record is no laughing matter — except for comedian Taylor Goodwin.
The 22-year-old Wattle Park man has broken the Guinness World Record for the most jokes told in one hour, delivering 571 gags to smash British comedian and BBC TV personality Tim Vine’s 2004 record of 499.
Goodwin prides himself on creating original, fast-paced content. So when he discovered Vine had won Best Joke at the Edinburgh Fringe for a version of a gag Goodwin Tweeted to his 18,600 followers two years ago, the world record challenge was on.
He says preparation and practice “came quite naturally”, but when he stepped into the spotlight at the Arkaba Hotel, he felt the pressure.
“With eight minutes to go, I asked the adjudicators if the milestone had been reached and one said ‘you’ve smashed it’ and the audience responded spontaneously in a standing ovation (which was) quite indescribable,” Goodwin says.
The UniSA education and arts student says although he has achieved his goal, one world record is not enough.
“I have also broken the world record for the most jokes told in a minute, but (the official attempt) will take place in another show.
“I also want to beat the javelin world record, but that is a bit of a long shot.”
