Walid El-Sayed sentenced for trafficking drugs while on home detention

Six weeks after being let out on home detention for trafficking a huge haul of drugs, this young man was caught with an even bigger stash.

Australia's Growing Drug Crisis

A convicted arsonist who was nabbed trafficking drugs just six weeks after being given bail on more drug charges faces more than a decade behind bars.

Walid El-Sayed, 28, trafficked a total of nearly $100,000 worth of methamphetamine and fantasy.

When police visited his home in November last year, they found 70.8g of ice and 3kg of party drug fantasy.

El-Sayed refused to answer any questions relating to the drugs and was kept in custody until January 15, when he was released on home detention.

Just six weeks later, police pulled over an unregistered vehicle being driven by El-Sayed.

Inside, they found 4.65kg of fantasy.

Judge Simon Stretton last week told the District Court that El-Sayed had been convicted of arson committed in 2013 and other minor offences in the past nine years – but his drug trafficking was a “significant escalation” in criminal behaviour.

He said it was “plain” El-Sayed was “at least a middle level wholesaling trafficker of these drugs”.

“It is not as if, as we often hear in this court, you were asked by someone to take something down to the pub and you were not exactly sure what drug it was nor how serious your conduct was,” Judge Stretton said.

“You were transporting a large commercial quantity of a very harmful drug knowing exactly how serious that was, … knowing you were on home detention bail for exactly the same kind of offending.”

Judge Stretton said El-Sayed had turned to drug use because of difficult personal circumstances and, in turn, started trafficking drugs to help pay off his drug debts.

El-Sayed was sentenced to eight years in jail for the November offending and five years and five months for his reoffending this year.

Judge Stretton ordered they be served consecutively – resulting in a sentence of 13 years and five months.

He set a non-parole period of six years and nine months.
