Plans for new and expanded clubrooms at Millswood Croquet Club – in the works for three years – have been ticked of by Unley Council.

The new rooms, which would replace a modest building, would allow the club to hold bigger functions, giving it another source of income.

The club currently has $560,000 secured for the project, but it will need more if it is to build an expanded home.

Unley Council committed $260,000 to the clubrooms in 2017 and gave the club another $20,000 for a new concept plan last year.

The club was given a Federal Government grant of $250,000 and has tipped $50,000 of its own money in for the project.

It will need to find more external funding in order to build the expanded function area, or be forced to scale back its plans.

It is understood the club has approached the State Government for money.

A concept designed in 2018 was rejected because it would have far exceeded the available budget.

According to a report by Unley Council city design manager Ben Willsmore, the current clubrooms were “small with limited facilities” and no longer met modern standards.

It said the current building was too old to be upgraded or expanded.

Cr Don Palmer said the new clubrooms would be a “vast improvement” on the “quaint shed” the croquet club currently used.

“This concept opens that up and makes it a far more amenable outfit all round,” Cr Palmer said.

Millswood Croquet Club president Stewart Kingsborough has been contacted for comment.
