The popular Tusmore Park wading pool has reached the “end of its useful life” and must either be replaced or removed altogether, Burnside Council says.
The council is inviting the community to have a say on the future of the 52-year-old pool, which has been increasingly closed in recent months because of its ageing infrastructure.
This could include refurbishing the current pool, replacing it with a water-themed play area or removing the pool and keeping the site as open space or installing a playground or plaza.
A Burnside spokeswoman said the pool’s pumping system was antiquated, making it difficult to manage its water quality.
She also said because the pool was unfenced, there was a health problem with dogs entering the water.
The council’s website said the pool’s shade sail does not meet modern standards and there were “safety risks” with the pool not being supervised.
Richelle Martin often takes her two children to the pool, and said it would be a “real shame” if it were closed.
“I’m sure it needs to be updated and it’s old, but I think completely removing it would be a backwards move,” Mrs Martin said.
“We already have enough playgrounds, it’s important to have diversity and different offerings for residents.”
Mother of one Victoria Smith, who also frequents the pool, also hoped it would be refurbished.
“It would be a shame to lose it,” Mrs Smith said.
“It’s a beautiful park and the wading pool is a local landmark.
“It’s also been a great meeting spot, my mother’s group have been there a few times over this summer.
“Our babies have loved it.”
If the pool is replaced, the council has committed to installing a fence around it.

A plan for the pool is expected to be finalised this financial year, following community feedback, and work to start in 2021/22.
Residents can share their views on the future of the pool at council-run Come to a Pool Party event, at the pool, Stirling St, Tusmore, on Saturday, March 14, 11am to 1pm, or by vising engage.burnside.sa.gov.au/tusmore-wading-pool-review before March 20.
