THE troubled Trak Cinema in Toorak Gardens could reopen by the end of next week.
New leasee Adam Towill told Eastern Courier Messenger today he hoped to have the Greenhill Rd cinema up and running by Thursday or Friday next week.
“We’re working at it,” Mr Towill, who also works at Unley Swimming Centre as a lifeguard, said.
“There’s a few bits and pieces to clean up along the way.”
Mr Towill said new carpet was being laid, walls repaired and painted and the staircase improved.
“(We’re giving) it a bit more energy and enthusiasm, it feels like it may have coasted along for a while,” he said.
“It needs a bit of fresh air. The place had an atmosphere and appeal with it, I don’t want to mess with that too much though.”
Mr Towill, who has signed a three year lease, said he was considering opening the cinema on Mondays and screening late-night films.
“If the demand is there, we’ll reassess,” he said.
“At this stage, the same times as before.
“I’ve always been interested (in running a cinema), I’ve not worked in commercial cinema before.
“It would have been really sad to see it go.”
Republic Theatres owner Michael Todd, who had operated the Trak since 2003, recently relinquished the lease.
