The Parade remade: $110m upgrade of Norwood Mall approved by State Government’s assessment panel

A $110 million project to transform the neglected Norwood Mall into an eight-storey retail and residential complex has been approved by the State Government’s assessment panel.

A $110 million revamp of Norwood Mall into a contemporary retail and residential complex has been described as “the most exciting development for Norwood in a generation” by the local mayor.

The State Government’s assessment panel ticked off on Australasian Property Developments’ plan for The Parade on Thursday.

It will see four towers built on land bordered by Edward St, George St and The Parade.

The new precinct includes an expanded Coles supermarket, four retail outlets, a medical centre and an office in an eight-storey building.

The upper levels will house 24 two-storey townhouses and two levels of carparking above the ground floor.

Two five-storey towers will be home to 40 apartments and four penthouses.

In addition, nine apartments are proposed for a three-storey complex facing George St.

Norwood Payneham and St Peters Mayor Robert Bria said it “aligns well with the council’s vision for the precinct and fits in with timing of The Parade masterplan”.

“This development will only reinforce The Parade’s reputation as Adelaide’s premier main street,” Mr Bria said.

“To have it approved is a big boost for confidence in the local economy.”

Seven trees will be removed but a 127-year-old cork tree – which was at the centre of controversy when earlier upgrade plans were released in 2014 – and a large river red gum will be retained.

It will also include parking spaces, with charging stations, for electric vehicles.

Construction is expected to start towards the end of 2020 and take two years to complete.

Coles first discussed an upgrade of the mall in 2011.

It lodged plans for a $50 million overhaul in 2013 but they did not come to fruition.
