The $6m plan to make this 300m street in Adelaide’s inner south one-way

IT’LL take almost six million dollars to make this 300m section of road in Adelaide’s inner south one way and the local council is keen to make it happen. Here’s the plan.

CLOSE to $6 million would be spent to make Oxford Tce a one-way street under a proposal to create a “destination” for pedestrians.

Unley Council wants to close Oxford Tce’s eastbound lane to traffic to make room for wider footpaths and “street furniture” on the 300m walkway between Unley Oval and Unley Town Hall.

Unley Council urban design manager Keith Davis told a council workshop last month a redesign would make the civic centre precinct more “pedestrian dominant”.

“The concept does not deny motor vehicles … it just considers the street as a destination over and above it as a transport connection,” Mr Davis told the workshop.

About 5400 cars and up to 1000 pedestrians use Oxford Tce every day, according to council figures.

Mr Davis told elected members the street’s 15 plane trees and 35 carparks would be retained under the proposal, which would cost about $5.8 million according to council estimates.

An Unley Council spokeswoman last week said lowering the street’s 40km/h speed limit had not been considered “at this stage”.

Mayor Lachlan Clyne expected the public to support the plan, which he said would make the street — which has a school and two kindergartens — safer for pedestrians.

But Cr Mike Hudson was concerned that blocking access to Oxford Tce from Unley Rd would increase traffic numbers on nearby Edmund Ave and Frederick St.

Cr Hudson said that problem would only increase as the council progressed its plan for up to 150 apartments behind Unley Town Hall.

Friends of the City of Unley Society president Ros Islip said the council should not make any decisions about Oxford Tce until it had finalised its Unley Central Development Plan

Amendment, which calls for high-rise buildings of up to 11-storeys in the area.

A report on the plan — including a timeline for public consultation and construction — was expected to be debated at a council meeting this month.
