Campbelltown City Soccer Club to get $1.5 million for synthetic pitch and female changerooms in Labor and Liberal promise

A SYNTHETIC soccer pitch costing $1.5 million could help a soccer club in the seat of Hartley avoid losing $30,000 each year through bad weather – and it’s assured of public funding for the cause too.

A SYNTHETIC pitch at Campbelltown could help the local soccer club avoid $30,000 lost each year through bad weather.

Both the State Government and the Liberal Party have pledged $1.5 million for a new pitch, along with female changerooms, at the Campbelltown City ground.

Chairman Don Leombruno said the artificial surface would stop the club losing thousands of important dollars through canteen sales when games are cancelled.

In 2016 there was a seven-week stretch during which Friday and Sunday matches were called off.

“We lost between $30,000 and $50,000 of revenue through canteen sales,” he said. “That hurt.

“In June, July and August — our key months — you’re governed by the weather.”

The club hoped installation could be completed by the start of the 2019 season, but was yet to decide whether it would convert its main or secondary grass pitch.

The women’s changerooms would service both fields.

Mr Leombruno expected an increase in player numbers for the club’s six female sides.

“The growth has been amazing, and the women have to be treated the same as the men,” he said.

“The girls come to games dressed, or put their boots on outside under the veranda.”

Football Federation SA chief executive Michael Carter welcomed the news, saying the Campbelltown club had the largest participation base in the state.

Candidate for Hartley and SA Best leader Nick Xenophon said he would ensure the facility was delivered on time in a balance of power position.

“I think it’s terrific, I fully support the proposal,” Mr Xenophon said.
