When Kevin Tutt joined Seymour College as principal four years ago – after a lengthy time at Prince Alfred College – he wanted to give every student the chance to succeed.
And it would seem he has achieved that, with the Glen Osmond girls’ school topping the table for Year 5 NAPLAN results not just in the east, but across the state.
Mr Tutt says the key to success has been a strong focus on literacy and numeracy, beginning in primary school, which is woven into the rest of the curriculum.
“I would say that literacy and numeracy are the foundations of a good education, but there’s digital literacy and civic literacy and cultural literacy and they all form part of being well educated,” Mr Tutt says.
“Our focus is on the foundational skills of education, which remain critical, but we’re moving to a broader concept of achievement … which is a holistic approach.”
He believes this has given his students the ability and confidence to excel.
“It’s academic, but also equally in all other domains of a young person’s life, such as wellbeing, sport and other related activities are all levels of achievement.
“Character is as important as literacy and numeracy.”
Mr Tutt also says treating each student differently and helping them with their specific issues is an important part of success.
“We commit to the achievements of every child and individualise learning as much as we can allow,” he says.
Seymour College also ranked third for Year 7 results in the east and fifth for Year 9 results.
St Peter’s Girls’ topped out for Year 3, Walford for Year 7 and Glenunga High for Year 9.
