Scramble crossing for intersection of The Parade and George St intersection in Norwood

COMMUTERS and pedestrians will have a safer passage through a troublesome intersection on The Parade after the State Government and the Opposition threw their support behind its upgrade.

COMMUTERS and pedestrians will have a safer passage through a troublesome intersection along The Parade, after the State Government and the Opposition threw their support behind its upgrade.

The Transport Department last week wrote to Norwood, Payneham & St Peters Council flagging its intentions to install a “scramble crossing” at the intersection of The Parade and George St, Norwood.

Liberal leader and Dunstan MP Steven Marshall will today unveil his plans to spend $30,000 on the crossing, if elected at the March state election.

The upgrade would allow pedestrians to cross in every direction of the intersection at the same time.

It would be based on similar pedestrian crossings at the intersections of Rundle Mall/Pulteney St and King William St/Pirie St in the city.

Mayor Robert Bria welcomed the pledges.

“With The Parade becoming increasingly popular, the number of vehicles and pedestrians has increased which has resulted in a greater focus on the need of pedestrian safety,” Mr Bria said.

He said the Transport Department was preparing final costs, designs and the signal sequence of the intersection, which would be provided to the council later this year.

Eight crashes have been recorded at the intersection in the past five years.

Mr Marshall said: “Countdown-timer scramble crossings have been rolled out in the city and they work well by freeing up the intersection for both cars and pedestrians.”
