Former public servant Rod Moss has been elected to Mitcham Council following the resignation of stalwart Stephen Fisher.
Mr Moss, who has lived in the Mitcham district for 50 years, beat a field of six others to become the newest Gault Ward representative.
The former State Government and Adelaide City Council worker said his top priorities would be “balance of finance, getting the budget back in order and getting the ever increasing rates back under control”.
“I’m focused on the traditional local matters rather than affairs that you’ve got other levels of government to address,” Mr Moss said.
“We should focus on traditional local business.
“It’s not only that … but I think, from my observations on the outside looking in, the council has probably tried to be everything to everyone at all levels of government and that’s not what council’s about.”
He said he had a strong connection with local sporting clubs and charitable outfits and was looking forward to advancing their causes as a councillor.
Mr Moss also paid tribute to Mr Fisher, who he said was on a “similar page” to him.
Mr Fisher, who served on the council for 29 years, resigned his post earlier this year due to ill health after suffering a stroke.
The former president of development activist group Save Our Suburbs was one of the longest-serving councillors in Adelaide.
The only remaining Gault Ward councillor, Jasmine Berry, then resigned months later following a social media spat with council colleagues.
It has left the area without representation.
Another by-election will follow in coming months.
Mr Moss’s first meeting will be on Tuesday night, where the council’s 2020/21 budget will be up for a final decision.
