Proposal to drop speed limit on The Parade to 40 km/h step closer

The speed limit could be dropped to 40 km/h for a section of The Parade within months.

Norwood, Payneham & St Peters Council wants the speed limit on part of The Parade dropped to 40km/h.

The speed limit on The Parade could be dropped to 40km/h within months, almost six years after it was first proposed by a Norwood, Payneham & St Peters councillor.

Cr Fay Patterson asked the council’s chief executive Mario Barone at the last meeting for an update on plans to drop the speed limit between Osmond Terrace and Portrush Rd.

The stretch of road is currently a mix of 50km/h and 60km/h zones.

Mr Barone said after the meeting there had been ongoing discussions with the Transport Department about dropping the speed limit.

“We’d like some consistency (with speed limits),” Mr Barone said.

“We hope over the next few months to get a decision.”

The council first proposed a 40km/h speed limit in October 2013 as part of an investigation into a masterplan for The Parade.

Mayor Robert Bria said the council wanted to develop consistency with speed limits to avoid confusion for motorists.

“Drivers are lucky to hit 40km/h anyway, it’s a reasonable proposal,” Mr Bria said.

The Transport Department has been contacted for comment.

Meanwhile, a 233-signature petition has been lodged with the council calling for two-hour parking limits on The Parade West in Kent Town to stop city workers parking there all day.

Residents and local traders say introducing timed parking between Capper St and the entrance to Prince Alfred College would improve access to businesses during working hours.

Mr Barone agreed telling the meeting all-day parkers needed to be moved from the street.

“There is no question we should put time limits in there,” Mr Barone said.

“Some businesses have no on-site parking.”

Cr John Minney said parking in the street was “impossible” at the moment.

“I fully sympathize with these people,” Cr Minney said.

“I really can’t see why this can’t be dealt with (now).”

The council’s general manager of governance and community affairs, Lisa Mara, said dealing with parking issues in isolation could move the problem into other streets.

The petition will be considered as part of the council’s city-wide parking review, currently being undertaken.
