AN ABANDONED caryard at a key St Marys intersection will be redeveloped as two, 24-hour food outlets under plans by petrol giant Peregrine Corporation.

The $1.25 million development, by the parent company of On The Run service station chain, would include a Guzman y Gomez Mexican restaurant and a Krispy Kreme store.

Peregrine bought the block at the corner of South and Daws roads, a former caryard left vacant for three years, for $2.25 million in July 2015.

In a letter to Mitcham Council, Peregrine town planner Andrew Caspar wrote that the company would have preferred to construct three buildings on the site.

However, a 4.5m strip of land on both South and Daws road had been designated for future road widening.

The two outlets would have a combined 30 carparks – one below the industry standard – but Mr Caspar believed the frequency of takeaway customers would alleviate any possible concerns.

He wrote that the development would “significantly contribute” towards Mitcham Council’s vision for the South Rd commercial area and would not present a noise problem for residents.

Mitcham councillor David Munro, whose ward covered the block, said it was time the land was developed.

“Obviously I’d like to see something put there because I don’t want to see vacant land,” Cr Munro said.

“My only concern would be the government’s intention is that South Rd becomes non-stop and the long-term implications of that … but it’s got that in the back of its mind.

“I’d hope that people would appreciate the development of the site into a nicer looking site as opposed to a vacant block. We’ve all seen what happened to the TAFE site (at Panorama) and what that is now.”

On The Run business development manager Phil Moir said the development would employ 50 people during construction and a further 90 staff once it was complete.

“Peregrine Corporation have owned the site for a long time and with the growth of Guzman y Gomez in Adelaide and the popularity of Krispy Kreme it was decided the site should be utlised with these offers,” Mr Moir said.

It was understood construction would begin shortly after approval was given by Mitcham Council.

On The Run already operated a service station 200m away from the site.
