PEREGRINE Corporation is considering a legal challenge to a decision to reject its plans for an On The Run service station on Kensington Rd, saying the $3 million development would create much-needed jobs.

Peregrine spokesman Philip Moir said the parent company of the petrol station empire was “understandably disappointed” after the Development Assessment Commission knocked back its proposal for a 24/7 outlet at the corner of May Tce.

“We are considering if we will appeal,” Mr Moir said.

“The development was to create much needed jobs for the state, which included 50 new jobs in construction and a further 15 ongoing retails roles for the community when the store opens.”

Minutes of the meeting – which was held this month behind closed doors – showed the commission agreed the development was not suited to the area and “would “impact … traffic movements and traffic flow”.

Mr Moir said the company had “worked hard to ensure the development was appropriate for the site”, including redesigning the proposal so that vehicles would only enter the service station from Kensington Rd and exit on May Tce.

The verdict followed a long-running campaign from local residents and Burnside Council to stop the development over fears it would be create traffic problems and ruin the amenity of the area.

The Eastern Courier Messenger last week reported May Tce residents had spent more than $10,000 to commission an independent traffic report which justified their concerns about the proposed petrol station.
