Norwood Morialta’s rising rowing stars giving back to the sport at the Australian Masters Champs

These rising rowing stars are used to battling it out inside a boat – but this week they’ve been lending a hand on the banks during a huge national event.

A local high school’s rowing stars are experiencing life out of their boats this week to give back to the support they love.

Norwood Morialta High athletes are volunteering at the 2021 Australian Masters Rowing Championships at West Lakes on Thursday and Friday.

It will give some of the state’s best young rowers show their appreciation for the sport, understand the work that goes in to the event behind the scenes and gain an appreciation for umpires and officials.

The 2021 Australian Masters was moved to SA following the indefinite closure for on-water activities at the Sydney International Regatta Centre with the extreme flooding in NSW earlier this year affecting water quality.

The Norwood Morialta students, meanwhile, will be helping with a range of regatta day duties including boat holding, scrutineering, presentation of awards, and general assistance.

Year 9 student Angelica Chia, who part of the school’s girls intermediate crew which competed at the Head of the River earlier this year, was looking forward to helping out.

She said it would be good to see how big, national events were run.

“You get some great experience with volunteering,” Angelica, 14, said.

“They (Rowing SA) changed the venue of the masters at such late notice so it’s important for us to help make sure the event runs smoothly.

I’m looking forward to boat holding and presenting the medals.

“Boat holding is where en you hold onto the boat at the pontoon before the start of the 2km race until they are ready to row off.”

The 2021 Australian Masters is one of three major events awards to SA.

West Lakes hosted the Australian Canoe Sprint Championships last week, while the World Rowing Cup stimulation event, featuring likely Olympic and Paralympic rowing teams, start next month.

“It’s a really good thing to see experienced, national rowers here in SA,” Angelica said.

The 2021 Australian Masters Rowing Championships are being hosted on Thursday (May 27) and Friday, May 28.
