The struggling Trak Cinema complex has received a much-needed shot in the arm with the opening of a new Greek restaurant at the Toorak Gardens hub this week.

Former Agapi Greek Cuisine chef Alex Pericleous opened Hellenik Kitchen on Tuesday after Argentinian restaurant La Caldera folded after only a few months of operation in the second half of last year.

It had replaced the longstanding, popular eatery Grimaldi’s.

Mr Pericleous, who is also Hellenik’s head chef, said he was looking to run “joint promotions” with the struggling Trak on Greenhill Rd, including discounted coffee and dessert for cinemagoers.

The Trak closed for two months last year before it was taken over by new lessee Adam Towill in March.

Mr Pericleous said he was “ecstatic” with the response to Hellenik from customers so far.

“It was way beyond our expectations,” Mr Pericleous said.

“We’re very happy to have it cranking again.”

He also said the imminent demolition of about 30 shops across the road for the $360 million Burnside Village upgrade was a further opportunity for trade.

“It’ll bring in a heap of tradies,” Mr Pericleous said.

“We’re excited about the development.”

Burnside Cr Julian Carbone said on social media this week that demolition was scheduled to begin in six weeks.

Burnside Village management has been sought for comment.

Meanwhile, Mr Towill said the cinema had received a spike in patronage over the past few weeks due to the school holidays.

“It had been a bit flat but it’s picked up the last few weeks,” Mr Towill said.

“It’s nice to see.”

The Trak will host a bushfire fundraiser on January 11 from 2.30pm with an advanced screening of The Biggest Little Farm.
