DORIS Chang makes a living from design and illustration but her latest project relies on the written word.

The Tranmere-based artist is launching Illustrated Letters, where subscribers receive a letter of affirmation, written in her distinct hand, in the post each month for a year.

“I’m an avid reader and text and writing are important to me,” she says.

“I keep a journal with lots of written work and I needed an outlet for that.”

Ms Chang, the creator of Little Sister Co cards and prints, says she’s been thrilled with response to the old-school project, with nearly $3000 of pre-orders received.

“I haven’t been able to tell them exactly what they’re going to get – it needs to be a surprise – but they’ve paid anyway,” she says.

While developing the letters project, Ms Chang, who works part time as a graphic designer, has also illustrated two children’s books: Lullabies for Bedtime, released last month, and Bouncing, Bouncing Little Joeys, which is on the shelves this month.

Her Little Sister Co greeting cards and artworks, painted with watercolours and ink, are a whimsical collection of designs depicting flora and fauna.

Ms Chang describes her style as “loose and organic”, with cartoon-like images and modern inscriptions such as “Congratulations, bloody proud of you”.

“I like to address the relationships we have with people so my cards are more specific to people than the occasion,” she says.

Little Sister Co will be at Bowerbird, Adelaide Showground, Wayville, from November 24-26 and Etsy Made Local, at Unley, on November 25.

Ms Chang will also be running workshops in ink lettering and watercolour illustration at Brick + Mortar Creative, Norwood, on December 9.
