A popular Panorama reserve could finally receive a much-needed upgrade after years of community campaigning.
Locals have been calling for an upgrade to the 6.65ha CC Hood Reserve, saying it lacked recreational facilities and needed upgraded lighting and fencing.
Labor candidate for Elder Nadia Clancy announced on Monday that the party would commit to a $1m upgrade for the reserve if elected in 2022.
Ms Clancy said, since her preselection in September, local residents had been talking about the need for work on the park.
“Locals are passionate about the CC Hood Reserve, and don’t want to see such a
beautiful part of our community go under-utilised,” she said.
“It’s huge and is a great focal part of that community but it’s not as good as it could be,
“There’s nothing really for older children or young teens, people have suggested things like a basketball rings or half courts, a small skate park and the need for an upgraded playground.”
A dog park was built at the reserve and a public toilet installed in 2018, but locals said the reserve needed more facilities for local families and youth to enjoy.
Panorama Clapham Community Group spokesman Neil Baron said many residents didn’t bother visiting the reserve.
“The park has potential and it could be wonderful but right now it appears neglected and second-rate,” he said.
“There are a lot of people who don’t even try to use the space anymore, it’d be hard to even put a blanket down and have a picnic and there is a BBQ area but only one.
“In 1975 it was quoted as it was going to be a paradise of a parkland … but it never went forward and it’s been neglected ever since.
“We don’t want to make a Luna Park out of it or a Wayville Showgrounds but something that people can actually use.”
