A $60 MILLION upgrade of Newton Central shopping centre is edging closer as the owner prepares to lodge plans for the first stage of the revamp.
Owner Frank Salandra said plans for the $10 million stage — a 2500sq m expansion to accommodate 15 new shops — would be submitted by the end of the month.
Mr Salandra’s 10-year vision for the Gorge Rd centre included a multi-storey building on the existing carpark, a cinema, triple the number of shops, restaurants and a gym.
He said a spruce up of the ageing centre was desperately needed to put life back into the northeastern retail strip and keep locals shopping in the area.
“The plans which I will be submitting very soon is just a preliminary upgrade,” Mr Salandra said.
“I’m hoping the plans will be approved because it would be great for the local community to keep them shopping here.
“I want to entice new businesses to Newton Central and an upgrade is the way to do this.
“The plans are taking time because I want to make sure I create something really nice.”
If approved, Mr Salandra hoped the first stage would be complete by Christmas.
Flight Centre Newton assistant manager Amanda Johnson was pleased an upgrade was likely to start this year.
“This is absolutely good news,” Ms Johnson said.
“It needs a facelift because the centre is looking a bit old and we need more car spaces.
“This will help make sure there are a lot more people that come here.”
Newton Central currently houses about 25 shops, including Target and Foodland.
Mr Salandra was unsure whether he would submit the redevelopment plans to Campbelltown Council or the State Government’s Development Assessment Commission.
