HIGH-RISE apartments at the old Le Cornu warehouse on Anzac Highway are still a possibility, after the site’s new owner flagged its intention to sell off a portion of the land.

German supermarket chain Kaufland last week applied to the State Commission Assessment Panel to build a two-storey $34.6 million supermarket on the Forestville property.

However, the company has also applied to adjust the boundaries of the 36,000sq m site.

Under the proposed boundary changes, Kaufland would use around 60 per cent of the land for its supermarket, eight small tenancies, an office and carpark.

The remainder would be subdivided and sold to developers.

Unley councillor Don Palmer, whose ward takes in the warehouse, said the council had been advised of the company’s intention to subdivide the block.

“The fact there is going to be a supermarket and some retail outlets there, and Goodwood Oval is only within walking distance, it is appropriate to have some residential living there,” Cr Palmer said.

“We, as a council, see the need to have more people in that area.”

An Unley spokeswoman confirmed the company had advised the council of its intentions to subdivide the site.

She did not know when the supermarket and subdivision plans would be assessed by the State Commission Assessment Panel.

The site’s zoning allows for buildings of up to six storeys.

A Kaufland spokesman did not respond to calls by the Eastern Courier Messenger last week.

The company paid $25 million last year to purchase the Le Cornu warehouse.

Kaufland, which only opened its first supermarket in Gemany in 1984, has more than 1230 stores in Germany, the Czech Republic and Poland.

It has more than 150,000 employees across the world.

The Le Cornu family announced in 2015 plans to close the warehouse, prompting predictions the massive city-fringe site would be transformed with high-rise apartments.
