Federal Election 2022: Sir Donald Bradman’s Kensington cricket clubrooms to get $8.3m replacement

Cricket clubrooms established by Donald Bradman will be replaced by an $8.3m facility funded by taxpayers, the under-pressure local MP says.

PM pledges over one million new jobs

Kensington cricket clubrooms established almost 60 years ago under Sir Donald Bradman’s stewardship will be replaced with an $8.3m facility, in the first major election campaign move in the contested seat of Sturt.

Liberal MP James Stevens, who is under threat from Labor in the formerly blue-ribbon seat, has confirmed a $3.6m federal grant to enable the shared clubroom project to proceed.

The $8.3m facility at Kensington Gardens Reserve will be shared by Kensington District Cricket Club and Burnside Rugby Club.

Mr Stevens said the federal funds would enable the replacement of clubrooms built in 1964, under a campaign spearheaded by Sir Donald – Kensington was the legendary batsman’s home Adelaide club.

“The new clubrooms will include suitable change rooms and facilities for female participation in both sports, as well as becoming a broader community facility for other local groups to use for meetings and events,” Mr Stevens said.

Kensington/Burnside spokesman Peter McCusker said the “massive” funding decision meant the clubs could “have real change rooms, real clubrooms and real facilities”.

The federal funds add to $2.67m in previously pledged state government money and up to $2m committed by Burnside Council in 2020.

Labor has been contacted for comment.

A poll commissioned by The Australia Institute and published on April 5 found Labor ahead 52-48 in Sturt.

But a Roy Morgan poll released on Tuesday found a swing back to the Liberals in South Australia in the past week of three percentage points but Labor was still ahead 53-47.
