A popular eastern-suburbs playground on the banks of the River Torrens is set for a $1.7m overhaul to address safety issues.
Norwood Payneham & St Peters Council has approved concept plans for the 5000sq m Dunstan Adventure Playground in St Peters.
A council report said the playground, built in the 1970s and well-known for of its long metal slide, had safety concerns because of its age and condition of the equipment.
NPSP Mayor Robert Bria said the playground was in need of a revamp.
“The upgraded playground will provide opportunities for recreation and relaxation, while creating a sense of place and strong social interaction,” Mr Bria said.
“Not only will the new Dunstan Adventure Playground provide much joy to families and the wider community, it will also will provide a boost for the economy and create jobs.”
Under the plan, all equipment, except the rope bridge and climbing structure, would be removed.
New equipment includes a 19m slide, a flying fox, in-ground trampolines, two swing sets, nature play, water feature, seats, shelter and opportunities for art installation.
There would also be new public toilets, lighting and better access to the playground.
The state government would contribute $450,000 towards the project. The council has allocated $1.25m.
“Local residents and the wider community will benefit greatly from this major upgrade,” Mr Bria said.
The council plans to start construction in August and have the project completed by May 2023.
The playground was named after former Labor premier Don Dunstan, who secured $23,000 in state government funding for the original project before it opened in 1976.
