Budding sports stars in Adelaide’s eastern suburbs will have a new gymnasium to call home, after Concordia College lodged plans for a $12m overhaul of its facilities.
The school has tabled plans with Unley Council to develop its gym into a world-class facility for both their 1200-student cohort and the public.
Director of community relations Jodie Escott said the school aimed to blend its new gym into its surroundings.
“Concordia College sits in the middle of a residential area, we were mindful when we were doing the design that it fits in and doesn’t look like an eyesore when people drive passed as well as blending into the general feel of Highgate itself,” she said.
The proposed development includes two full-sized courts, change facilities, a function room, three general learning areas meeting rooms and a small cafe.
Part of the development is on land occupied by Highgate Lodge – which the school purchased in 2007 – and an adjacent carpark, which would be removed to make way for the gym and at least 30 new car parks.
The current gymnasium, adjacent to Winchester St, was built in 1999 and no longer meets the needs of the school. It would be turned into a performing arts centre.
“This really started to come to life last year where we briefed design firms just to see what was possible within a budget as well as having the board approve those figures,” Ms Escott said.
“Now we have lodged with council in the hope it is something we can bring to life in a timely manner.”
If the plans are approved, the school predicted it would be open for public use in 2023.
The application is open for public notification until September 13.
