A COMMUNITY hub, playground and fitness equipment form part of a multi-million dollar vision for Campbelltown Memorial Oval.

Campbelltown Council has spent $40,000, including $20,000 from the State Government, creating a masterplan to redevelop the Darley Rd, Paradise oval, which is home to nine clubs and community groups. The plans were developed through Oneighty Sport & Leisure Solutions, a Norwood-based sports and recreation planning firm.

But when the works will be carried out and how the plan will be funded is yet to be decided. The council is seeking community feedback on three master plan options with costings ranging from $9.4 million to $9.9 million.

The plans would all involve demolishing seven existing buildings and building a $6.6 million two-storey club room complex

The new clubrooms would be shared by the precinct’s nine users including Rostrevor Old Collegians Football Club, East Torrens District Cricket Club, Newton Jaguars Netball Club and the Campbelltown Community Club.

Under the plan, the 5.3ha oval would also get new lights, public toilets and two additional netball courts.

A new path would be built linking the oval to Linear park and Paradise Interchange.

The oval’s surface would also be improved and traffic issues around the oval would be investigated.

The three options have slightly different building and oval sizes and the most expensive option includes an additional 22 car parking spaces on top of the existing 198.

According to a council report, the works “could be staged over a number of years, with (the council) seeking funding through external grants and contributions from the clubs”.

“The master plan is about setting a vision for the precinct that the council and stakeholders can work towards over time,” the report said.

Campbelltown Mayor Simon Brewer said it was a long-term plan and would improve the precinct for existing users.

“This plan is really dealing with the existing and longstanding issues at the site caused by the piecemeal approach taken to development there oven many years,” Mr Brewer said.

“Several of the buildings are approaching their use-by dates so it makes sense to take a look at how it should all work when we do reach the death knell for them.

“It’s certainly not a plan that’s likely to happen in the short term.”

Rostrevor Old Collegians football director Reonaldo Cialini welcomed the plan.

“The biggest improvement for us will be the improved change rooms and the possibility of better lighting, which would help us at trainings and would allow us to play trial matches at night,” Mr Cialini said.

“The buildings are fairly old so I think consolidating them into one complex is a good idea and will hopefully make it a more welcoming place for supporters.

“Our club has a lot of families so the possibility to have a playground is another great idea.”

Newton Jaguars Netball Club vice president Michelle Thomas said the works would encourage more people to play and watch sport at the site.

“At the moment we are working out of a tin shed which houses all our equipment so to have new club room facilities would be fantastic,” Ms Thomas said.

“Having a place to host events, maybe having a canteen and somewhere for parents to go out of the cold while the kids are training would be great.

“If we had those facilities we could run our own carnivals and entice more people to join our club.”

The council has already allocated $300,000 in its 2014/15 budget to create a World War II memorial at the oval which will include a memorial wall, a military crest display, lighting, bollards and a garden.

The memorial is set to be ready for next year’s Anzac centenary.

Consultation on the plan is open until Friday, July 25. Contact Campbelltown Council for more information.
