Burnside Council spending on food and flowers revealed
Burnside Council is being transparent about its monthly spending on corporate credit cards — its first report reveals thousands of dollars were spent on catering and flowers in July.
Burnside Council spent more than $3000 in catering costs and almost $900 on flowers in July alone, new data has revealed.
The council is now publishing monthly reports of its corporate credit card transactions and expenditure on its website.
It outlayed more than $30,000 for the month, including a total of $3186.84 on catering for staff meals, elected member workshops, finance management group and assessment panel sessions, and council meetings.
It also spent $1400 on its July citizenship ceremony — for catering, flowers and flag expenses.
It has 19 active credit cards.
The largest individual expense was $1622.13, on computer software.
The council’s corporate and development general manager, Martin Cooper, said the new register was a sign of the council being more transparent.

“Over the past few years, there has been a push by sections of the media and community for greater transparency in local government financial management,” Mr Cooper said.
“These improvements to our process provide transparency and will enable council to build trust in our financial management with the community.
“We will continue working to provide our community with more visibility of our financial management practices, and publishing these records is another step in this direction.”
The register will be published in the third week of each month.
