Bicycle sharrow line-markings in Forestville keep being erased by someone and repainted by Unley Council

THREE times an Adelaide council has painted a bicycle to mark a section of road as a shared zone for cars and bikes — each time it’s been mysteriously removed, likely by a chemical stripper.

SOMEONE is erasing line-markings in Forestville designed to improve safety for cyclists.

The Lyons Pde bicycle sharrows, which direct cyclists along the Marino Rocks Greenway next to the Seaford rail line, have disappeared three times in the past few months, most recently at the end of February.

Unley Council repainted them a week later.

Goodwood Ward councillor Bob Schnell said it appeared the vandal was using some type of chemical to erase the bicycle signs, rather than painting over them.

“I think it’s terrible,” Cr Schnell said.

“It’s an established cycle route down there and it’s a very quiet street.”

Similar bicycle sharrows on nearby streets have stayed intact.

“It’s someone who’s objecting to having cyclists come through their way,” Cr Schnell said.

Repainting the line-markings has cost Unley Council $400.

It has reported the matter to police.

A police spokesman would not say if they had any suspects.

“Wilful damage to public property that might impact road safety will not be tolerated and may result in a criminal prosecution,” he said.
