South Australia’s newest caravan park – and the closest to the Adelaide CBD – has opened at the Adelaide Showground.
The Wayville tourist park, first flagged last year, opened its gates on June 24 and has had a steady stream of guests, despite ongoing border closures.
It has 81 sites.
Bookings opened in mid-May and the first tourists rolled in on June 25 for an eight-day stay – and there have been people there every night since.
Royal Adelaide Show general manager Michelle Hocking said there had already been strong interest in the caravan park, and bookings as far ahead as March next year.
“Approximately 50 per cent of our bookings are coming from regional SA, 23 per cent from NSW and then pretty much spread evenly between WA and QLD,” Ms Hocking said.
“It will be good when the Victorian border does reopen as we expect a solid market from Victoria, especially when events and sport bounces back post COVID-19.
“The feedback from guests so far has been very positive in particular around the location and its proximity to public transport to the city and beach.”
Some guests extended their stays after the continued border closure with Victoria was announced, Ms Hocking said.
The caravan park was part of a $7 million upgrade of the Adelaide Showground’s southeastern corner, which will also be used for live shows and music events.
In April, it was announced the Royal Adelaide Show would be cancelled for just the fifth time in its 181-year history.
