Armed with a machete, high on Xanax and wearing a balaclava, this young robber targeted caravan park residents after his family was threatened over his unpaid debt.

A man armed with a machete terrorised caravan park residents and demanded money in attempts to repay a debt.

Dylan Lennon Stone, 20, was high on Xanax and could see no way out except to rob the unsuspecting victims.

The Adelaide District Court heard Stone knocked on a door in a Barmera caravan park on May 15, 2021.

“You were wearing a balaclava and were armed with a machete,” Judge Heath Barklay said during sentencing.

“You demanded money and the victim handed you a $50 note.”

Stone then attempted to rob a couple in the same caravan park on May 16, 2021.

“This time you were in company of another man – both of you were wearing balaclavas,” Judge Barklay said.

When the victim came to the door the men demanded his wallet but he managed to chase them away.

Stone was arrested the next day by police who found photographs of the knife, the balaclava and a $50 note on his phone.

“Your explanation for the offending is that you owed a debt of about a thousand dollars,” Judge Barklay said.

“You were being threatened, as was your family and girlfriend, with harm if you did not repay the debt.”

The court heard Stone had been abusing Xanax for several days before the offending.

“You say that you were emotional and could not see a way out of your situation except to commit the robbery,” Judge Barklay said.

Stone, of Barmera, had previously pleaded guilty to robbery.

The court heard Stone has issues with methamphetamine and cannabis.

“Your exposure to drugs occurred at a time when you were vulnerable and young,” Judge Barklay said.

“Worse, your exposure to drugs came through family members who were meant to look after you.”

The court heard Stone, who is remorseful for his actions, hopes to get a job when he is released from custody.

Judge Barklay sentenced Stone to four years and 10 months jail, with a non-parole period of two years and six months.

“The combination of circumstances, including the time of night and the nature of the weapon used by you, would have been terrifying to the victim,” he said.

“Although you did not threaten specific violence, nor was there any physical violence, the presence of the machete was highly threatening.”

The sentence was backdated to August 16, 2021.
