Greyhound off-leash days praised by Dog and Cat Management Board, with new guidelines for more events

Greyhounds are the only dog breed not allowed to run off-leash in public. But they are soon set to get more chances to play free.

Adopted greyhounds could be given more freedom to run off-leash after the state’s pet management group hailed trials as “highly successful”.

The Dog and Cat Management Board praised off-leash days held in West Torrens and Alexandrina councils, saying they have created a blueprint for the events to be rolled out across the state.

Greyhounds – nicknamed “dishlickers”– are required, under pet laws, to be on a lead at all times in public places – except where an exemption is granted by the board.

They are the sole breed to which this regulation applies.

But trials at Port Elliot and a dog park in Kurralta Park – where greyhounds were allowed to run and play together freely – have proved a success.

Retired Greyhounds Find New Homes Across Australia

In a letter to West Torrens Council, board manager Linda Allery said the board was “delighted” with the events, which proved “such a success” they created guidelines for “all councils” to offer off-leash days.

The Greyhound Adoption Program SA – Greyhound Racing SA’s rehoming initiative for retired racers – was also involved in organising the events and putting together the guidelines.

Port Adelaide Enfield councillor Hannah Evans, who owns a greyhound, is excited for her council to host off-leash days.

“I think greyhounds are such a misunderstood breed and they deserve a bit of freedom,” Cr Evans said.

“It’s important for all dogs to have an opportunity to socialise and I’m hoping a lot of people will take it up and they will enjoy it.”
