Mount Gambier’s newest eatery is offering an Instagram-worthy menu sprinkled with all things sugar and spice.
A self-confessed sweet tooth, Kelly Schembri has launched Crave Dessert Bar serving up on trendy and decadent creations.
“It’s not your normal dessert bar,” Mrs Schembri said.
“We’ve got bubble waffles, cereal pops, fairy floss burritos – they’re always a big hit – an assortment of cakes and gluten free Golden North Ice Cream.”
Mrs Schembri jumped at the unexpected chance to buy local icon Dickins’ Delights Gourmet Confectionery in 2018 and when she discovered the homegrown brand would need to move at the end of last year she cooked bright idea.
Out the back of the James St shop front the team will continue making the classic range of toffee but she was determined to create something Mount Gambier had never seen before.
While the bar, perfectly position next to the city’s bowling alley, will have a small selection of stock for purchase its focus is its kaleidoscope of takeaway treats – 90 per cent of which are or can be made gluten free.
The Covid-19 pandemic hit the business hard and after letting staff go in 2020, Mrs Schembri said it was a great feeling albeit stressful sifting through thousands of resumes to fill eight new jobs.
“We lost over $100,000,” she said.
“We distribute to around 150 places across Australia, some places are still closed or they’ve completely lost their business, which means, in turn we’ve lost it as well.
“We’re just starting to come back now, everything’s still pretty rocky with Covid.”
Crave Dessert Bar is now open at 32a James Street, Mount Gambier.
