A Comanchero bikie was meeting up with fellow gang members to discuss leaving the motorcycle club at the time of the offending, a court has heard.
Matthew James Cameron appeared in the Elizabeth Magistrates Court on Monday after pleading guilty to meeting up with two fellow bikie members in a public place, while on parole, in August 2021.
Defence counsel said Cameron was at The Angle Park Tavern on August 15 2021 with eight men, including two other club members, to discuss leaving the club as it “did not meet his expectations of brotherhood”.
“His involvement with the club, the Comancheros, essentially started when he was in prison as a 19 year old,” he said.
“He was befriended by a number of people who ultimately were club members but he didn’t associate as a club member until approximately 2018 or 2019.
“He saw the club as a bonding association, friendship, mateship but that was a false premise.
“While he should have gone about this in a different way, he and the other accused met at the hotel, all agreeing that they should absolve themselves of connection with the club.”
Cameron, 31, was arrested and charged on August 26 for being present with two or more criminal organisation participants on August 15 2021.
CCTV footage reviewed by police on August 20 showed the three members meeting at The Angle Vale Tavern for a short period.
Magistrate Christopher Smolicz said the footage confirmed that the eight males attended the tavern in two separate vehicles at about 3.30pm.
“The men were observed to enter the hotel, order drinks and sit together at a table inside the hotel,” he said.
“At the time you were a member of the Comancheros, two of the males attending the meeting … were also participants.
“The law prohibits you from being present with two or more participants of a criminal organisation (in a public place), it has not been suggested that you did not know that some of the other people were persons with whom you were forbidden with associating in public.”
Defence counsel said Cameron has “changed his circumstances” and has since left the Comanchero Motorcycle Club.
Cameron received a back dated sentence of 9 months and 12 days commencing on August 20 2021.
