Two glass towers proposed for Adelaide Post Office site

A NEW $300 million proposal would see two commercial towers built on the heritage-listed Adelaide Post Office site. Here’s how it would look.

TWO major city developments worth more than $500 million combined will be assessed later this week.

They are a $300 million proposal to build two commercial towers — one 15 storeys and the other 22 storeys — on the Adelaide Post Office site in the city, while retaining the heritage-listed buildings and the $250 million Calvary Hospital expansion and consolidation into one facility.

The Development Assessment Commission’s report states the GPO redevelopment is supported by the Government Architect and the State Heritage Unit — subject to further details being provided — and the Calvary Hospital development, on Angas St, has been recommended for approval.

The GPO redevelopment would provide office space for up to 3800 workers, shops, a ground-level piazza and eateries.

It also includes partial redevelopment of the Telephone Exchange building and demolishing the western portion of an addition to the GPO built in 1983.

Advice from Adelaide-based Dash Architects found the plans would have negligible impacts on the heritage value of the buildings on the site.

The new Calvary Hospital would replace three existing facilities and provide 397 beds.

Deputy Lord Mayor Houssam Abiad said the city’s economy was faring better than many parts of the state.

“We have been seeing regular investment into Adelaide in the past two years,” he said.

“There has been a lot of hotel and residential developments announced and these two (proposal) will certainly add to the city.

“I’m expecting we will continue to see more (major investments) in Adelaide over the next few months.”

The commission is an independent planning body which decides on major developments worth more than $10 million in the city.
