Apartment construction in the Adelaide CBD has officially hit new heights, with Realm Adelaide officially becoming the city’s tallest residential tower.
The $100 million Austin Pl development, the largest residential building in the city, officially topped out at 132m on Wednesday afternoon.
The 40-storey building will equal the height of Westpac House, but is 3m shorter than the Adelaidean apartment and hotel building, which topped out on November 2, and will be SA’s new tallest building.
To mark the “topping out” a crane will lift the tree up onto the top of the building.
Realm Adelaide National Sales Director Matt George said he was proud of the milestone because it contributed to a changing Adelaide.
He said Adelaide was catching up with other major capital cities.
“We have an ageing population and there are a lot of people choosing lifestyle over the big backyard … and they like the security (and) the views and the amenity of apartment living,” Mr George said.
“(Apartment living) is extremely common in New York, in London, in Melbourne, in Sydney and I think Adelaide it catching up very quickly.”
Built over the iconic Renaissance Arcade, 295 of the 310 apartments, have already been sold.
The northern penthouse sold for $5.2 million to a local SA family, breaking the record for the most expensive apartment ever sold off the plan in the state.
