A wild beer snake has caused unexpected havoc and delays during the first day of the Australia v India Test match at the Adelaide Oval.
Last night, moments before Indian quick bowler Mohammed Siraj faced off against Australian batsman Marnus Labuschagne, the Aussie stepped back from the crease pointing.
The crowd – and commentators – followed the batsman’s outstretched point to discover what had held up play.
Labuschagne had spotted one fan running through the restricted area behind Siraj’s approach carrying a massive beer snake – the commonly used term for a stack of empty beer cups collected by those who drank them.
The Fox Cricket commentary team shared a chuckle at the display, but said the fan had picked the wrong moment to make his run.
“There’s a chap behind the site screen with a fairly elaborate setup,” they said.
“He hasn’t realised that he’s entered stage right at exactly the wrong time, come on mate it’s the cricket.
“Look at him, just times his run, bowler coming in, Marnus is like ‘hang on, old mates got the beer snake up there’.”
Once on the other side of the restricted area, the fan settles in, and play shortly resumes with Labuschagne hitting a boundary shortly after.
