When COVID-19 restrictions were enforced back in March, House of Health co-owners had to find a sustainable business model to cater to loyal customers.
They converted a 10-person cafe into a pantry, started contactless home delivery, as well as sourced compostable containers and gloves to keep its carbon footprint low.
Some of the initiatives will continue post pandemic, co-owner Chester Frank says.
“When COVID-19 hit, no one was coming into the CBD so we had to pivot pretty quickly and get the products people loved to them,” Mr Frank says.
“We had to change the way we do things.”
The business, in the Central Market, has been nominated in the 2020 #MyAdelaide City Awards, which highlights the best of the best in Adelaide and North Adelaide.
It has been recognised in the Reimagined section, highlighting a business that created a new revenue stream during the COVID pandemic, and Reconnect, where businesses find new ways to connect with customers.
A way of engaging customers included encouraging customers to start their own veggie patch, Ivan Oulianoff says.
“As part of the delivery service we got these thank you cards … made with recycled newspapers that have actual seeds in them – like radish and lettuce,” Mr Oulianoff says.
“That was our first go at trying to carbon offset the impact of the delivery, something we put on the ground pretty quickly.”
You can still vote for your favourite City and North Adelaide business.
Voting closes at 4pm today. Visit https://www.adelaidenow.com.au/thecityawards
