Work to immortalise four South Australian music greats on the streets of Adelaide has kicked off, starting with a laneway dedicated to singer-songwriter Sia Furler.

Sia Furler Lane, between the Rockford Hotel and Jam Factory, will be formally named after the artist next month after a new 18-metre high mural called She Imagined Buttons, featuring the singer/songwriter, is finished.

The mural is part of a wider Adelaide City Council plan, first mooted by the Sunday Mail in 2018, to name four laneways after musicians Sia, Paul Kelly, The Angels and Cold Chisel.

Each lane will have a mural or piece of public artwork related to the artist.

Adelaide City Council Lord Mayor Sandy Verschoor said it was important to celebrate the CBD’s musical roots, particularly because it was a UNESCO City of Music.

She said if the new laneways are received positively, there could be opportunities to rename other laneways after other artists “as time goes on”.

“There are a lot of famous artists that came out of Adelaide, and continue to come out of Adelaide, so it is a great way to celebrate it,” Ms Verschoor says.

The Angels Lane will run off Gawler Place, Cold Chisel Lane will run east of Burnett St and

Paul Kelly Lane will run behind Town Hall.

Sia Furler Lane is close to where she performed with acid jazz band Crisp at the now-demolished Cargo Club on Hindley St.

Thebarton-based artist Jasmine Crisp, 25, is painting the mural of Sia and wants to capture the artist’s “playful and childlike spirit”.

The council will undergo an expression of interest process for the other three murals and artworks, with the entire project set to be complete within the next 12 months.
