The 128-room Adelaide Oval Hotel will begin taking bookings from March next year ahead of its opening in September, with major on-site construction starting today.
Planning Minister Stephan Knoll and hotel general manager Bodelle Francis have confirmed the $42 million development was on track to open before next year’s ICC T20 World Cup.
It will create 450 jobs during construction and a further 120 full-time jobs once the hotel opens.
Ms Francis said there had been “amazing demand” for bookings in the event and conference spaces.
Planning Minister Stephan Knoll said the hotel would help cement Adelaide Oval’s reputation as a “world-class” venue.
“This comes off the back of the record tourism spend numbers we have seen just this week that show that investments like this are needed to keep our city and state growing and moving forward and creating jobs,” Mr Knoll said.
The five-storey hotel will be built on two elevated pods that follow the curves of the stadium’s eastern facade and will not encroach on the parklands or the plaza.
Off-site work on the building started in August.
Adelaide Park Lands Preservation Association president Shane Sody was concerned the hotel would jeopardise the parklands’ chance at becoming UNESCO world heritage listed.
“A hotel inside the parklands will hinder, not improve, the prospects of world heritage listing,” Mr Sody said.
“It is like putting a graffiti tag on the Taj Mahal in the hope somebody will gawk at it.”
