An Adelaide-based gin distillery has taken personal hygiene into its own hands in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak.
Gilbert St’s Prohibition Liquor Co has made its own line of hand sanitiser to address the shortage of the product in local supermarkets and chemists.
It comes as the brand “envisages” shutting down its Gilbert St tasting room and bar presence within days and move to a “product direct to customer model” during the pandemic.
The sanitiser, is made primarily from the tails or leftover spirits from the distilling process, combined with hydrogen peroxide and glycerine.
Prohibition Liquor Co co-founder and graphic designer Adam Carpenter said the idea came after not being able to buy the product for patrons and staff.
“I couldn’t sleep over the weekend thinking about all of this and just got up and researched the project and designed our own product,” Mr Carpenter said.
“We are not in the hand sanitiser business at all and don’t plan to be, but we do have a lot of alcohol on hand, the key ingredient in sanitiser, and we know how to make and package a good product.
“It is really to support the people who support us.”
At the moment, the company has made 250 bottles by hand, but it could produce up to 1000.
The sanitiser, which should not be consumed, takes about a day to make.
Prohibition Liquor Co co-founder Wes Heddles said the range is “one small thing we can do to help in this type of crisis”.
A 100ml bottle comes free when you purchase a full-sized bottle of gin, which start at $99.
