JoyBird on King William Rd set to shut its doors

The charcoal chicken restaurant will shut its King William Rd doors to find a new nest – just seven months after opening.

Fancy charcoal chicken shop JoyBird will close its Hyde Park doors, with its management citing the $15.5 million upgrade of King William Rd as a contributing factor.

JoyBird will continue to operate as an events and pop up at events like Gluttony and Tasting Australia and its owners, the Kardachi family, say they are “actively” looking for a new spot to set up, possibly in the city.

Kardachi Food and Wine Collective marketing manager Emma Kardachi said the current premises at 164 King William Rd, Hyde Park, would be rebranded into a new concept.

However, she could not shed too much light on the new project and its timing.

“We know that people love JoyBird, they love the concept but we think the Hyde Park location could be better served with an alternative concept, which we are working through at the moment,” Ms Kardachi said.

“The King William Rd redevelopment hasn’t quite been what we expected it to be, so that has partly contributed to things like foot traffic and I guess the understanding of what the JoyBird concept it all about.”

Owners Simon Kardachi and Adam Liston, also the executive chef, opened JoyBird, which is currently trading at Gluttony, in August last year.

JoyBird offers chooks that have been split in half and cooked over charcoal on a grill designed by the team who did the fire pits at Shobosho in the city.

Sides, including potatoes, roasted veg, salads and sauces are made from scratch.

They told The Advertiser they believed it had the potential to open multiple venues across the country and export to Asia.

The timing of when the shop will close is yet to be determined.

The Advertiser reported last year that Unley Council’s nine month road upgrade had driven traders to the brink, with four stores, including Dulwich Bakery and Flowers 152, shutting their doors because of stagnant trade.
