BEING waste conscious is something that has been close to Jessie Spiby’s heart since she was a little girl.

“It was the way my grandma lived – nothing was wasted in her home and she took a lot of pleasure in quality food,” Jessie, 32, says.

Now, the former MasterChef contestant is using a new business venture – My Grandma Ben at Plant 4 – to launch her own war on waste.

Visitors to the brunch and tapas-style cafe will be able to trade their homegrown fruit and veggies – which will be used on the menu – for coffee.

“There’s so much food out there not being used and I liked the idea of engaging the community,” she says.

The cafe will also sell sustainable products including bamboo toothbrushes, food wraps, keep cups and biodegradable cotton buds.

And there will be no takeaway coffee cups.

“It’s something I feel really strongly about so it’ll be interesting to see how that goes,” she says.

My Grandma Ben will open August 1. Plant 4, Bowden, 0402 149 029, mygrandmaben.com
