The name Home Ice Cream will no longer ring a bell on South Australian streets, with the company set to take its trucks off the roads by the end of September.
The Advertiser has been told about 11 workers have been made redundant after the company, which has bases in Pooraka and Lonsdale, chose to cease operations in the state.
It comes as ASIC documents reveal Wex Australia — which operates the Motorpass fuel card — last month made an application in the Victorian Supreme Court to wind up Home Ice Cream Pty Ltd.
An employee, who asked not to be named, said trading would stop on September 27.
He said there were some problems with staff being paid late, which The Advertiser confirmed, but that has since been resolved.
“Everything was going wrong, but then they got some accounting firm to crunch some numbers … and then we got told we were going to get made redundant,” the employee said.
“It’s come to an abrupt end, we have got to October 7 — that is D-Day — but we stop vending on September 27.”
He said staff were “lovely people” to work with.
“I loved the job — it was all about spreading the love,” the employee said.
The employee said he would miss watching children run to the truck for a treat.
Another employee Michael Laffin, in a post on his Facebook page — Michael The Home Ice Cream Man Run 240 — the brand was closing in SA.
“It is with sadness that I notify all of you ice cream lovers that Home Ice Cream in SA will be closing down in just a few mere weeks,” he wrote to his followers.
“I want to thank those who have supported me in the time I have come around and will miss the friendly visits and chats with you all.”
